A “healing surge” is a measure of a character’s ability to gain a second wind, absorb healing magic or respond to the rallying cries of his superiors. A character only has a certain number of healing surges per day; once these are exhausted, the character must rest before spending another.
Spending a healing surge causes a character to gain a number of HP equal to 1d8 + the character’s Hit Dice. A character may, as the result of a spell or other effect, spend multiple healing surges at a time.
Certain powerful magics may allow a player to heal without expending a healing surge. If this applies, it will be noted in the effect’s description.
